Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

January 05, 2016

When winter hits and we start getting calls about furnaces that aren't generating heat, a lot of them can be linked back to irregular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace problems are not addressed, your system could suddenly stop operating and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a couple warning signs you can be on the lookout for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system quits working.

Furnace Age

The normal life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a safe bet to start furnace shopping now. Selecting a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in a hurry. Give yourself enough time to research and weigh all of your choices.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get up there in years and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been appropriately maintained. Imagine the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be spent on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last few years of a furnace's life are when your system incurs the most breakdowns. Begin adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the last two years - a new system could be more cost effective.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any weird sounds coming from your system? Furnaces start making strange noises at the end of their lifespan. If your furnace is switching on and off frequently or blowing cold air, it's time to think about getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home efficiently. Your home may start feeling stuffy and any family members with allergies might notice an uptick in their symptoms. Some other indicators are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.

If any of these indicators sound like what you are feeling with your furnace, it could be time to start researching a new system.
